National
Junior Athletics’ Girls' League, Southern Premier Division, Croydon 28th
July 2002
The eight-strong Ladies Junior League team did all that was asked of
them at Croydon on Sunday. With
only 9 of the 30 eligible athletes available due to holidays, including a large
contingent in Manchester watching
the Commonwealth Games, the squad was further hit when English Schools Champion
Natalie Street pulled out on the day after a calf injury, jumper Fran Rigby
withdrew after aggravating an injury when setting a new PB in her first event the long jump, and
Hayley Mottram arrived too late for her first event the 800m. So a potential
third place became seventh.
With track coverage
thinly spread it was the field
events where the points were won. Mel Harrison won B hammer in a new PB and also
placed 2nd in the discus & 4th in the shot. Throwing
partner Sarah Deacon won the B discus, was second in the hammer, third in the
javelin & B shot and
even tackled the triple jump for valuable points.
Kate
O’Sullivan performed superbly with a 100m hurdles PB, for 4th, and
was 2nd in the B pole vault & third in the high jump as well as
running in the relay. Faye Powell, normally a distance runner, turned out
despite a chest infection and filled in to score jumps points with an excellent
high jump3rd, a triple jump PB & long jump points, as well as a relay leg.
Natalie Adams
showed tremendous team spirit running the 800m, 1500m & relay, placing a
good third in the longer run.
Completing the
team were Fran Rigby, whose PB long jump gained 3rd, Hayley Mottram, 5th in the 400m and Hannah Gamester, 5th
pole vault & 4th B javelin.
Despite the set
back with
one fixture left the team
occupy the fourth qualifying place for the National Final on 8 September, and will
hope to turn in a good result in the last meeting at “home” at Walthamstow
on 18 August.
