National Junior Women’s League, Southern Premier Division, Walthamstow - Sunday 18th August 2002
The “Home & Away”
Havering Mayesbrook Under 20 ladies team placed an excellent second in the
National Junior League Premier Division match hosted by the club at Walthamstow
on Sunday, due to the unavailability of Mayesbrook Park Arena through
resurfacing. The results ensured
the team have qualified for the National final at Derby on 8 September.
Excellent field event results were the foundation to the team’s success. Sarah Deacon was in excellent form winning the A hammer, B discus, placing second in the B shot and fifth in the javelin. Mel Harrison made it a hammer double, and took second place points in the discus and shot A strings. Amy Rogers made her league debut with second in the B javelin and third in the 100m B.
Kirsty Smith was second in the triple jump and close to her long jump best, placing fourth. Lynsey Clark celebrated her first appearance in the league with a triple jump PB of 10.25m to claim second, and also placed third in her first attempt at the 400m.
Katie O’Sullivan set a new PB and club under 17 pole vault record of 1.90m to win the B event, and also placed third in the high jump and was close to her hurdles best. All rounder Sara Luck won the B high jump, as well as third in the 400m, fourth in the 800m as well as running the sprint relay. Captain Hannah Gamester scored good pole vault points in third and was fourth in the B long jump, as well as running the opening sprint relay leg.
Nicola Schofield tackled the 400m hurdles for the first time, placing third in an excellent 70.0 secs and returned to run a leg in the 4x400m relay. Hurdles partner Nina Brennan was runner up in the B 400m event and third in the B string 100m hurdles.
Laura Jones set a season’s best time in the 100m and later placed third in the 200m, and ran a storming anchor leg to bring the sprint relay team home in third. English Schools 400m champion Natalie Street (second claim member) stepped down to the 200m and had to give second best to Shaftesbury’s Gemma Nichol, who competed for Scotland in the 400m relay in the Commonwealth Games. Natalie also competed in the sprint relay and made up three places with a swift 55.8 secs 400m relay leg to place third.
Consistent Natalie Adams was fourth in the 1500m, and ran in the 400m relay, as did Caroline Smith, competing in the league for the first time. Caroline had earlier placed fifth in the 800m. Faye Powell, who has dabbled with the jumps recently, returned to the 300m, placing sixth.
The young team, 9 of the 15 from the under 17age group, are now looking forward to the competitive national final, in which they placed sixth last year, against the top four northern clubs and the other three top Southern clubs.
