A
tremendous team performance earned a scratch u20 Ladies team third place in
their opening National Junior League Premier Division fixture at Harrow Weald on
Sunday. With
three more fixtures to come the division looks like developing into a five-way
battle for the top four qualifying places for the national final.
Just
three wins but a host of runner-ups and minor placings ensured that the Havering
Mayesbrook ladies held off promoted local rivals Woodford Green and Essex Ladies
for third place. Sara Luck was the only track winner cruising to victory in the
800m A race, kicking for home at the bell and opening up a two second gap. She
also scored high jump third place points, and contributed a leg to the sprint
relay before running the fastest leg for the 4x400m squad.
Kirsty
Smith was an impressive triple jump winner leaping a new outdoor best of 10.99m,
within 5cm of her indoor club record. In the process she beat Woodford’s Diana
Osagede who has a superior PB. Kirsty also placed second in the long jump,
exceeding 5m for the first time and ran the opening leg for the sprint relay
team. Lynsey Clark was the other winner, taking in the B discus by almost 10
metres. The versatile Hornchurch 16-year-old also notched up a pair of jumps
second places, in both long and triple jump.
There
was hat-trick of second places in the throws from English Schools medallist Mel
Harrison, who also added a shot third place for good measure.
Katie O’Sullivan scored a high jump/400m hurdles B runners up double
and also scored points in the sprint hurdles.
Hayley
Mottram defied the strong winds to run close to her best when coming through to
take second in the 400m A, and also ran in the 200m and both relays. The team
spirit was typified by Ria Lyons. After a strong run to place second in her main
80m B event, she filled vital gaps in the 100m and 1500m, before finishing a
tiring day with a 400m relay leg. Despite limited training Laura Jones ran
strongly in the sprints with fifth in the 100m and stepping in at five minutes
notice for the 200m B, where she placed fourth, before running in the sprint
relay.
