National Junior League, Southern Premier Division, Eton, 17 August 2003

Mel Harrison again starred as a short-handed ladies junior team just fell short of a national final place at Eton yesterday. Placed fourth in the league at the start of the meeting and needing to beat either Ashford or Shaftesbury to confirm their qualifying place, the team suffered from too many gaps on the day due to holidays.

Mel Harrison was a double winner. She held off a strong challenge from Norwich's English Schools Champion Kayleigh Southgate to win the opening shot put event, with throwing partner Vicky Thompson doing enough for B string victory. Second claim member Thompson celebrated her A level results with a winning A string hammer throw as Mel Harrison took the B honours.

On to the javelin and Mel launched the 600g implement to a new PB of 32.65m to claim second, with Amy Rogers ga ining the same position in the B string. The pair combined again in the unfamiliar triple jump - where Mel gained fifth place A points, as Amy again added B string second. Amy had earlier placed third in the B long jump.

Mel's busy day concluded in her discus speciality as she was runner-up, with Vicky Thompson also placing second in the B competition.

Faye Fullerton was the only track winner winning the 800m from the front with a fast sub- 2 mins 10 secs clocking but otherwise there were limited highlights. Nina Brennan set a new 100m hurdles PB, after placing fourth in the one lap hurdles event. Robyn Matson returned from injury for a good 3000m league debut.

In the sprints the pairing of Laura Jones and Kara Graham scored solidly, with Laura bagging a pair of B string sprint thirds, with Kara gaining two A string fifths to add her her similar long jump placing.

Final team member Faye Powell toiled hard to contribute an important ten points to the team's tally.

But at the end of the day all the team now have to look forward to is a better showing next season when team manager Tony Benton is hopeful of a stronger squad. Faye Fullerton and the injured Hayley Mottram now leave the junior ranks while a group of the successful under 17 squad step up.
