The
powerful women’s squad, who ended last season on a high with second place in
the national final, got their season off to a flying start with a second place
finish. But the newly promoted men, competing in the Southern Premier Division
for the first time, found the pace hot and ended up in the wooden spoon
position.
The Ladies, racked up no less
than nine individual victories and dominated the match in the events from 400m
to 3000m.
Harriet Scott again starred,
winning the 1500m in a new PB and also set in new lifetime best in the two lap
event in which she placed second. Sadly for the club she misses the rest of the
summer season as she has now headed off to Malawi for four months as part of her
pre-university gap year.
Her B string partners were both
victorious. In the 800m Hayley Stibbs marked her club debut with a narrow win
while Helen Roche improved her PB in claiming victory in the 1500m B.
In the 3000m Megan Foley led
from the front an defied the breezy conditions to win by over 100m and her B
string partner Robyn Matson dipped under the 11m barrier to take the B string
honours.
Chloe van Wulven was a double
winner, coming from behind as Shaftesbury’s Noni Mordi faltered at the last
barrier, and her first time high jump clearance of 1.65m earned her maximum
points. She was ably supported in
both events by busy Sara Luck who won the B high jump, and collected a trio of
third places in both 100m & 400m hurdles and javelin.
Junior international Lucy
Sargent, fresh from relay practice with the national squad the previous day,
shrugged off the cold headwind to win the 100m.
The 400m duo of new signing
Lucy Rodgers and Lauren Clark were both runners up in their respective races,
and Lauren later returned to also place third in the B discus in a
new PB, while her older sister Lynsey Clark was third in the A
competition.
There were also top three
placings for Kirsty Smith (long jump), Christina Kalejaiye (B 200m), Nicola
Schofield (400m hurdles) and Danielle Ross (B shot).
