The Junior Ladies had to contend with gale force conditions in their second league fixture at Ashford on Sunday.  But they battled the conditions to finish third and at the half way point in the four match season they are still looking good for a top-four place that earns a place in the end of season national final.

Megan Foley was the only club winner, winning the 800m the hard way from the front although her time was badly affected by the blustery conditions. In the B string Vicky Smith made her league debut and ran well for third and she returned to the track just 40 minutes later for another third place in the 3000m.  Her A string partner Robyn Matson finished powerfully for 2nd in a time not far from her best.

There was a glut of other second places.  Katie Richardson had to give second best to Woodford rival Jessica Sparke in the 1500m A string, while her B partner Hayley Stibbs ran also well for runners up spot.  There was also a second place double for the 400m duo of Lucy Rodgers and Lauren Clark who both had to contend with an outside lane draw and were both overhauled by their Blackheath opponents in the straight.  Richardson, Stibbs, Clark and Jenny Szantai combined for third in the final tack event the 4x400m relay.

Siblings Lynsey and Lauren Clark both claimed discus second places, while the high jump pairing of Chloe van Wulven and Sara Luck both lost out on count back in their competition. Van Wulven later returned to place second in the sprint hurdles and did well to finish after losing her stride pattern against the gale when contesting the lead, taking the last but one hurdle on her “wrong” leg. Sara Luck was 4th in the 400m hurdles and 5th B javelin. Her partners Nicola Schofield (400h) and Emma Christmas (Javelin) were 3rd and 4th respectively.

Christina Kalejaiye was 2nd in the B long jump and was a good fourth in the 100m but a leg strain meant she tackled the 200m and relay less than flat out. Her long jump partner Kirsty Smith took advantage of the following wind for a new PB in 4th but a sore knee affected her triple jump performance.

Katie O’Sullivan returned to competition after a two-year lay off and sailed over a new pole vault PB for B string second, and also tackled the hammer for the first time and scored hurdles points. Danielle Ross completed the team with vital pole vault points.
