South of England Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill, 26 January 2001

Gold for Sara, Silver for Faye in SEAA Champs
A gold medal for Sara Luck and runners up spot for Faye Fullerton were the Havering Mayesbrook highlights in the South of England Cross Country Championships at muddy Parliament Hill on Saturday. But Debbie Sullivan was just outside the medals in fourth.

Sara Luck's victory in the Under 15 event continued her unbeaten cross country form this winter and sets her up for a good placing in the national event. Her team mates in the South of England race were Lynsey Clark (78th), Rosie Saunders (83rd) and Nicola Scofield (111th), the team placing seventh.  Faye Fullerton was the only HMAC competitor in the Under 17 competition, as sickness led to late withdrawals, but she battled well to place second.

In the Senior Women's race Debbie Sullivan was up against a strong field. She lost out in the medal hunt to fellow internationals Hayley Yelling, Angela Newport, and Liz Yelling and had to settle for fourth, but was happy that this was a one place improvement on her position in last year's event. Nicky Barnett ran well to place 26th, with veteran Ruth O'Sullivan 139th.  Jo Sullivan pulled out mid-race after a dizzy spell, so there was an incomplete team.

Any individual or team medal hopes in the under 13 race disappeared a few days before with the withdrawal due to illness of Megan Foley. In her absence Charlotte Watkins  in 24th was the first club member home, supported by Robyn Matson in 54th, Leanne O'Neill in 63rd and Vicky Smith 71st, the team placing sixth. Lauren Clark (100th) and Jackie Hilton (162nd) also gained useful experience.

Only three HMAC men were in action. In the Senior Men's race John Barker was 58th and Gary Howard well down the field. Neill Collins was the sole competitor in the under 20 men's event, finishing 75th.
